Christopher Brooks, Brigham Young, Player News

2022 PHIL STEELE PRESEASON ALL-INDEPENDENT SECOND TEAM: RB Christopher Brooks, BYU,...Transferred to BYU after graduating from Cal where he was the leading rusher for the Golden Bears in two of the past three seasons...Played in 40 games for Cal from 2018-2021 and totaled 1,734 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns on the ground while adding 50 catches for 345 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver. - BYU Football

Whenever the Cougars needed to put a game away late during the 2021 season, they inevitably turned to running back Tyler Allgeier to get the job done - and he always came through. Now Allgeier is with the Atlanta Falcons and it appears that role will go to Brooks, who transferred from Cal. Brooks, who had 1,734 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns and 50 catches for 345 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver in 40 games with the Bears, showed enough during spring to get the nod as BYU's starting running back. Now that confidence has to be rewarded. Brooks will have veteran offensive line as well as bruising fullbacks to open up holes, so now he just has to perform. - Daily Herald

Cal-transfer Chris Brooks will come to BYU as a three-year starter. All spring, we heard the same thing coming out of camp. Cal transfer Chris Brooks came in and immediately made an impression. And now, BYU is giving him the reigns to the running back room in his last college season. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said Brooks earned the right to open the year as the clear-cut starter. This is even earlier than Tyler Allgeier earned the starting spot last season. Brooks edged out Lopini Katoa and Jackson McChesney for the starting spot. Notably, McChesney is currently sharing third-string duties with Miles Davis and Hinckley Ropati. But that will likely get ironed out in summer camp. Brooks is a similar back to Allgeier, a downhill runner who makes one cut and goes. Allgeier set BYU's single-season rushing touchdown record last year with 23 touchdowns and 1,602 yards. - Salt Lake Tribune

Christopher Brown Jr. had never been called into a postgame press conference before so the California running back needed a little help to get settled in. The way Brown ran the ball in the Golden Bears season opener, he might as well get used to it. Brown rushed for a career-high 197 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries in his first start, and California overcame a sloppy first half and beat UC Davis 27-13 on Saturday. "We were trained for this and we were overly prepared for this," Brown said. "That played a big role in how many touches we get, how many plays we get. It's really the guys up front that made the holes. I just ran. They blocked."

Brown, a seldom-used backup to Patrick Laird last season, provided the biggest spark and became the first Cal running back to go over 100 yards in his first start since Jahvid Best in 2008. "We knew Chris would get the ball a lot," Bears coach Justin Wilcox said. "That's what we expect of him. He's a big, physical guy and this is his type of game. Give it to him and let him break tackles. Probably more touches and more yards than he had all last year. He's been preparing for this." That was critical on a day when Cal's passing game was hit-and-miss for most of the afternoon. Quarterback Chase Garbers shrugged off two turnovers and completed 16 of 28 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, both to Kekoa Crawford. Greg Thomas kicked a pair of field goals, including a career-best 47-yarder, as the Golden Bears won their third consecutive opener under Wilcox. - AP College Football
