Auburn center Nick Brahms is calling it quits on his playing career because of lingering knee problems. Tigers coach Bryan Harsin announced the veteran starter's decision on Monday, five days before Auburn's opener against Mercer. Brahms, a sixth-year senior, started 33 games over the past four seasons. Brahms missed the Birmingham Bowl after knee surgery. Tate Johnson is listed as the starter for the opener after failing to get into a game last season. "(Brahms) tried after last season. He had the injury going into the bowl game and then came back and just not there physically to be able to go out there and play," Harsin said. "Really to play at the level that he wants to play at. "Nick has been at every practice. He has helped our players out. He has helped the O-line out. He will continue to keep doing that." - AP College Football

Auburn is still in wait-and-see mode when it comes to senior offensive lineman Nick Brahms. Brahms has been sidelined for much of the preseason while dealing with an undisclosed injury, leaving his availability for the start of the season in question. The uncertainty surrounding Brahms' status appears as though it will continue into game week, with Auburn's season opener against Mercer now just eight days away. "Right now, we got to find out where he's at, because there's still some things he's working through at this point," Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said Thursday evening during his weekly radio show. Brahms, it should be noted, underwent a knee procedure in December that kept him out of the Birmingham Bowl and limited him during spring practices. He was full-go for the start of fall camp, working with the first-team offense earlier this month before being sidelined the last couple of weeks.

A sixth-year senior, Brahms opted to return to Auburn and take advantage of the NCAA's free year of eligibility made available to student-athletes during the pandemic. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder has started 33 games at Auburn over the last four seasons, including 28 consecutive starts at center spanning the second half of the 2019 campaign and culminating with last season's Iron Bowl. "Nick's a guy, he chose to come back, and he's experienced, he's tough, he's wanting to be successful on the football field one more time," Harsin said. "And we'll see... We'll find out what it looks like with his career moving forward." - Birmingham News

The availability of Auburn starting center Nick Brahms is up in the air with two weeks to go until the Tigers' season opener against Mercer. Brahms, a sixth-year senior who chose to return for an additional season, has been dealing with an undisclosed injury this preseason. He has been held out of practice for the last week, including two scrimmages and Saturday's practice at Jordan-Hare Stadium that was open to the media. "Still just kind of waiting that one out a little bit, see where he is at," Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said. "At some point we'll figure out what his situation is, but just kind of let him settle in a little bit, heal up and then figure out what the final decision's gonna be."

Brahms underwent knee surgery in December that kept him out of the Birmingham Bowl and limited him during spring practices. He was cleared to return this summer and opened fall camp as Auburn's first-team center. The Navarre, Fla., native is a former four-star prospect who has appeared in 40 games after redshirting as a true freshman. He has 33 career starts at center, including 28 consecutive starts spanning the second half of the 2019 season and running through last season's Iron Bowl. - Birmingham News

2022 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCHLIST: Nick Brahms, Auburn,...For Brahms, it's the third straight year on the Rimington Trophy Watch List. The senior, who is one of only two centers in the SEC to make the watch list the last three years, has played in 40 career games at Auburn and has started every game at center each of the last two seasons. He was granted an extra year of eligibility this year because of COVID-19. Between Brahms and Kaleb Kim (2019), Auburn has now had a center make the Rimington Trophy Watch List in each of the last four years. In 2014, former All-SEC offensive lineman Reese Dismukes became the first Auburn player to win the Rimington Trophy. - Auburn Football

Auburn wants to win games by running the ball to set up the run. Succeeding with an old-school approach starts with the offensive line-last season when healthy Nick Brahms was a stalwart for the Tigers as their center. However, too often, the line battled injuries and inconsistency. Brahms enters the list at number seven because he knows the offense and is battle-tested in the Southeastern Conference. Head coach Bryan Harsin can't afford another stressful season in his second year. Auburn has to win. Victories become easier when an experienced center anchors the offensive line.

A good center is always vital. It matters even more for Auburn since Bo Nix left the Plains to become a QB for the Oregon Ducks. Brahms returns for a sixth season. He redshirted as a four-star prospect out of Navarre, Florida, in 2017 and became the starter the following season. Brahms missed the Birmingham Bowl with a knee injury that required surgery. He also was a limited participant in spring football, which allowed Jalil Irvin to get valuable reps at center. Brahms was the fourth senior to proclaim his return to Auburn for a super-senior campaign. He capitalized on the NCAA's extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Birmingham News

Player-led collectives have grown more common as some athletes worry about agents or other third parties taking a cut of their name, image and likeness deals. The most recent NIL trend swept through Alabama this past week with the formation of the Plains NIL Club. Roughly three-quarters of the Auburn football roster partnered together with YOKE, a licensing company, to offer fans a way to engage with Tigers' athletes throughout the season via an online membership.

Bailey O'Sullivan, one of YOKE's co-founders, told AL.com that "more than 75% of the team" has signed on. Set to open this July, multiple Auburn players announced their intent to join, including senior starting center Nick Brahms, sophomore running back Jarquez Hunter and freshman quarterback Holden Geriner. Junior linebacker Kameron Brown said O'Sullivan, an Auburn alum, met with Auburn players over the last few weeks and each Tiger offered each an opportunity to join. - Birmingham News
