New Mexico State's offense has featured talented running backs, but depth at the position was not a priority as the Aggies' focus was primarily throwing the football under previous head coach Doug Martin. The Aggies averaged 30 attempts per game last season and averaged 3.3 yards per rush. Jerry Kill's last stop, Texas Christian, averaged 39 rush attempts last season for five yards per carry. TCU had six players with at least 20 carries last season with four players rushing for over 350 yards last year. The Aggies had three players with over 60 carries last season, but leading rusher Juwaun Price (135 attempts for 693 yards) and quarterback Jonah Johnson (130 attempts for 166 yards) have transferred.

Depth in the backfield is a priority in Kill's offense and the Aggies have added talent accordingly. "I think by the time fall camp rolls around, there will be three or four running backs who will cause some problems for teams," Aggies offensive coordinator Tim Beck said. O'Maury Samuels is the Aggies leading returning rusher and Alex Escobar has limited experience, as well. But Kill addressed the running back position in recruiting. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M transfer Jamoni Jones and TCU transfer Ahmonte Watkins stood out during spring practice. The Aggies have added Coffeyville Community College transfer Star Thomas since spring practice and freshman Makhilyn Young signed in February and will be on the field when fall camp begins on July 29. "They have put a great running game together and we have nine running backs and I can tell you 100 percent that all of us can play," Jones said. "They want you to be able to catch the ball out of the backfield, line up in the slot and go block a defensive end, so you have to be versatile." - Las Cruces Sun News

O'Maury Samuels appeared headed to greatness as a 16 year running back at Los Lunas High School. Samuels blew up into a four-star recruit as a junior with offers from three Power 5 conference teams and interest from others following his performance at The Opening regional in Dallas in 2016. Samuels committed to Michigan soon after. Now at the age of 21, Samuels finds himself atop a depth chart for the first time in his career as a redshirt junior with New Mexico State. "I think I have matured a lot," Samuels said. "I look at other things in life. I focus on mental health. I want to be a better player and a better person. I'm just more at peace in myself."

Samuels was the No. 1 prospect in New Mexico at Los Lunas, but his college career consists of 99 rushing yards and 21 attempts at Michigan. His time at Michigan ended when he left the school in 2018 following an incident that led to one misdemeanor charge of domestic violence and one misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of property in Ann Arbor's 15th District Court. The domestic violence charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement, according to news reports. "I learned a lot in terms of life and football," Samuels said. "I look at (NM State) as a second chance to play football. During COVID-19, there is a lot of uncertainty. Football is going to be back at some point, so I want to stay ready." - Las Cruces Sun News

Former Michigan running back and four-star prospect at Los Lunas High School O'Maury Samuels is in New Mexico State football fall camp. Samuels will be on scholarship, and will have two years of eligibility remaining after he sits out this season due to transfer rules, according to Aggies head coach Doug Martin. Samuels left Michigan following an incident in December that led to one misdemeanor charge of domestic violence and one misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of property in Ann Arbor's 15th District Court.

The domestic violence charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement in February, according to news reports. "All of that made it much easier because there was nothing legal that was a hindrance to him or to us," Martin said. "We talked to everybody at Michigan and our administration here. We look forward to O'Maury having a second chance and we are moving forward." - Las Cruces Sun News
