Data Scout Notes: 2020: NAC...Transfer from Florida...2019: June-Misdemeanor battery charges dropped.

  , , Player News

Brian Edwards was arrested for first-degree misdemeanor battery of his girlfriend in May and spent time at the Alachua County Jail, but the charges were later dropped in June due to insufficient evidence for the state attorney's office to pursue the case. His girlfriend declined to press charges, and the Florida defensive back decided to leave the Gators through the transfer portal just a month later. "This was a very tough decision for me," Edwards said in his statement on Twitter. "I have built great relationships, impacted others, and grown so much throughout the time attending the university."

Now the off the field incident with his girlfriend may or may not have played a role in Edwards' decision to move destinations. However, in his post online, he noted his time in Gainesville had "some ups and downs." Regardless of what he meant, Edwards isn't on Florida's campus anymore. He's 1,175 miles away in the small college town of Mount Pleasant and, of course, playing for the coach that once recruited him - Jim McElwain. - Central Michigan Life

When first-year Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain accepted the job to lead the Chippewas, he brought a majority of the old coaches he associated with to Mount Pleasant. Now, he's nabbed one of his old players in defensive back Brian Edwards through the transfer portal, a source close to the team told Central Michigan Life. Barring a waiver from the NCAA, Edwards is expected to miss the 2019 season due to transfer rules. The safety has two years of eligibility remaining. In his two seasons playing for Florida, of which one was in 2017 for McElwain, Edwards played in 18 games. He spent time on defense and special teams. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound defensive back was expected to be in a backup position for the Gators in 2019. - Central Michigan Life

Florida's depth at cornerback has taken another hit with the announcement Monday from junior Brian Edwards that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal. Edwards posted his decision to transfer on Twitter. With Edwards moving on, the Gators will have only seven scholarship cornerbacks on the roster for the start of preseason camp later this month, including two true freshmen who just recently arrived on campus - Kaiir Elam and Chester Kimbrough.

Edwards, who is from Miramar, played in 18 games over the past two seasons with zero starts. Last season, he recorded seven tackles, four pass break-ups, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery. He played mostly on special teams as a true freshman in 2017. - GatorSports.com

UF defensive back Brian Edwards will not face charges for misdemeanor battery due to insufficient evidence, according the state attorney's office. Edwards was arrested May 6 for allegedly grabbing his longtime girlfriend by her neck as she attempted to leave their apartment. State Attorney Bill Cervone said Edwards' girlfriend told investigators a criminal act did not occur and did not want to prosecute Edwards, a junior from Hollywood. A Gainesville Police report stated that upon the officer's arrival Edwards' girlfriend had marks on her neck, along with a scratch on her shoulder. - Orlando Sentinel
