  06/05/22 - DE Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

University of Arkansas defensive end Dorian Gerald announced Friday he would spend his seventh collegiate season as a Razorback again. Gerald, who transferred to Arkansas from College of the Canyons (Calif.) prior to the 2018 season, posted on social media on April 25 he had entered the transfer portal. However, on Friday, he wrote on Twitter, "After many nights of prayers, and tons of support from my family, coaches and loved ones! I like to finish what I started!! I'll be finishing my last year of football here at THE University of Arkansas!!" A UA spokesperson confirmed Friday that Gerald had been granted a seventh season, based on a series of injuries and the covid-19 pandemic season of 2020.

Gerald's veteran presence should be an asset on an Arkansas defensive line that will be thin entering the 2022 season. Gerald's story as a Razorback has been one of injuries, including a broken bone in his leg in practice after last year's season opener versus Rice. The native of Florence, S.C., was also injured and lost for the year in the 2019 season opener against Portland State and injured in the 2020 season opener against Georgia. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Determined to piece together a productive 2021 season after two consecutive years filled with adversity, Dorian Gerald sought the advice of a former defensive lineman who reeled in accolades during his playing days. He didn't have to look very far. A first-team NAIA All-American and two-time all-conference performer at Pittsburg (Kan.) State in the 1980s, Sam Pittman has offered Gerald bits of insight and wisdom on what can make the redshirt senior an impact player on a revamped front. Those conversations appear to have resonated. "We always talk about motor," Gerald said Wednesday following the Razorbacks' 11th preseason practice. "We need motor and we need go, go, go, go."

Not every player with the setback history of Gerald would continue to push and fight like he has. He suffered injuries - including a season-ending one to his neck in 2019 - in each of the Razorbacks' last two season openers, and was limited a year ago. Gerald also missed time late last season as Arkansas and its defensive line group battled the effects of covid-19. But all of that is now behind him, and his sole focus is the road ahead. "It's going pretty smooth. Coming off the injury, I've been getting better," Gerald said. "I feel like I've never been injured before. I feel like I'm healthy again, and that's been the main thing for my coaches - being healthy." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/02/20 - DE Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Senior defensive lineman Dorian Gerald's status for Saturday's game at Mississippi State remains unclear two days from kickoff. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Gerald injured his ankle in the Razorbacks' season-opening loss to No. 4 Georgia and that the staff was taking a wait-and-see approach in terms of his availability this weekend. Gerald, who started against the Bulldogs at the JACK position, did not practice Tuesday. "Well, I don't know," Pittman said Thursday when asked if Gerald had made progress and could factor into the game this week. "We're hoping (he is able to play), but as of right now we'll just have to kind of wait and see." Along the defensive line, Arkansas is expecting sophomore Mataio Soli to return to the rotation. He did not play against Georgia and no reason was given for his absence. If Gerald is unable to play, Soli would seemingly be next in line to start in his place. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Three Arkansas defensive players will return to practice this week, but the status of one of the Razorbacks' defensive starters is unknown. Senior Dorian Gerald is "wait and see" with an ankle injury he suffered during the second quarter of the Razorbacks' 37-10 season-opening loss to Georiga, Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Monday. Gerald had four tackles and 1.5 sacks prior to the injury. "He obviously turned his ankle," Pittman said, "so we'll have to wait and see what comes out of that." Gerald is still listed as Arkansas' starter at the JACK position, which is a defensive end position that can turn the defense into a 4-3 or 3-4 look, based on whether he puts his hand on the ground. Sophomores Mataio Soli and Zach Williams are listed as backups to Gerald at the position. Pittman said Soli and defensive backs Devin Bush and Jarques McClellion will return to practice this week. None of those three players played in the game against Georgia, and no reason was given for their absences. - Northwest Arkansas Times

First-year Coach Sam Pittman is banking on Gerald to produce in the SEC much like he did at College of the Canyons (Calif.), where he racked up 96 tackles, 43 tackles for loss, 22 sacks and 6 forced fumbles in two seasons. The 6-3, 260-pounder was rated the No. 1 strong-side defensive end coming out of the junior college by 247 Sports in the 2018 signing class. "He really, really looks good," Pittman said during the summer. "He's got tremendous foot speed, and he's another guy who should be a leader on our football team." Pittman said he fully expected Gerald to show up when the pads went on. "I've been really pleased with him of course, and I will be when we put pads on. We haven't yet, but I promise I will be. He's too talented for us not to be.

</p>"I've had one-on-one conversations with him about what we needed to do. He is a guy that could be a strong leader for us. Kids look up to him. He is getting his quickness back. He is getting stronger. I really like the kid, think he is smart, a good guy to have in that D-line room." Gerald said leadership doesn't come naturally to him, but he's improving in that area heading into his senior year. "I mean, that's what they put on me," he said. "They told me they want me to lead a little more vocally because ... I never was a guy to lead vocally. I always tried to lead by example, because speaking just never was me. But yeah, I think I've got to be more of a vocal leader this year for the team because I am a senior." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/08/20 - DE Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Nearly one year ago, Dorian Gerald's health was in question and his football career was uncertain as he laid in a bed at a local hospital. In the second quarter of Arkansas' season opener against Portland State last August, a puzzling injury abruptly ended Gerald's year. Two days after the game, former Razorbacks coach Chad Morris announced the junior college transfer strained an artery in his neck. Morris, who labeled the injury "very strange," added he did not know what the future would hold for Gerald other than he would be on blood thinner and undergo testing over the next several months. It was far too early to say whether he would be able to play football again.

Gerald, though, was deadset on returning to the field, writing in a tweet that he would be "back next year better than ever." Next year has arrived. And based on what he has been seen in offseason conditioning and team walkthroughs in recent weeks, Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman is a believer in the defensive end. "He is a very vocal guy and has been working his tail off, so I've been really pleased with him," Pittman said of Gerald on Thursday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "And I will be when we put pads on, but we haven't yet. But I promise I will be. "He's too talented for us not to be." - Northwest Arkansas Times
