 Jacques Turner, Louisville, Player News

Louisville had a massive hole to fill in the middle of its defensive line when Jared Goldwire left and it filled that gap by getting Turner out of the transfer portal. Turner, a transfer from Southern Miss, was a standout up front before entering the portal. He had 100 tackles in three years with 31.5 tackles for a loss and 14.5 sacks. At 6-foot-1 and 290 pounds Turner looks the part to fit Louisville's nose tackle hole. One of the key positions in Louisville's defense, the Cardinals need somebody to take on double teams up front as much as possible. If Turner can do that, it's step one, but he was also a strong pass rusher at Southern Miss with just under five sacks a year. This doesn't mean we won't see Dezmond Tell up front. After a strong freshman season, he missed much of the spring with an injury, but he's likely to work himself back into the rotation at some point. But until then I'll go with Turner starting at nose tackle until proven otherwise. I think he has the chance to be an impact player there. - Courier Journal

One day after adding the first player to the 2022 class, Louisville has added an impact transfer, as well. Former Southern Mississippi defensive tackle Jacques Turner entered his name into the transfer portal last week and committed to Louisville on Sunday afternoon. This fills a position of need for the Cardinals. After Jared Goldwire declared for the NFL Draft, Louisville had a major hole in the middle of its defense line. Turner, who had 45 tackles and six sacks in 2019, expects to be a player to help there and throughout the defensive line. Turner, in his three years at Southern Miss, tallied 100 tackles, 31.5 tackles for a loss and 15 sacks. The 6-foot-1 and 289-pound transfer will join Dezmond Tell, Malik Clark, Jared Dawson and Henry Bryant at the interior defensive line position. - Courier Journal

Three of Southern Miss' most veteran football players are ending their time with the Golden Eagles prematurely. Senior defensive end Jacques Turner, senior linebacker Racheem Boothe and junior running back Steven Anderson have all opted out of the 2020 season and all three plan to enter the transfer portal as graduate transfers. According to the Sun Herald, wide receiver and kick returner Jaylond Adams has also opted out of the 2020 season although it is not clear if he is in the transfer portal.

Turner and Boothe are two of the most productive defensive players in recent Southern Miss history. Turner has logged 14.5 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss across the last three seasons and was named first-team All-Conference USA in 2018. Boothe has been limited by injuries in the past two seasons but has still made 175 tackles with 22.5 tackles for loss since 2017. Anderson has rushed for nine touchdowns in the last two seasons. He was Southern Miss' third-leading rusher in 2019 and second-leading rusher in 2018. - Clarion Ledger

Kevin Perkins ran for his first two touchdowns as a Golden Eagle and the Southern Miss defense smothered Rice 20-6 on Saturday.
