Skylar Thompson, Kansas State, Player News

Kansas State didn't change much at halftime despite trailing Texas Tech by two touchdowns. The outcome wasn't much different from recent seasons either - a sixth straight victory in the series for the Wildcats, who ended their longest Big 12 skid since joining the league in 1996. Skylar Thompson passed for 296 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Kansas State came up with sacks on the final two plays by the Red Raiders in a 25-24 victory Saturday. "We didn't change that many calls; we just played them better," said Kansas State's Chris Klieman, who is 3-0 against Matt Wells of Texas Tech in a matchup of coaches who joined the conference together in 2019. "It was a very simple game plan. We told the guys we were going to keep the game plan really simple so they could play fast. In the first half we played fast and made mistakes...and in the second half we kept it pretty simple, played faster and made plays." Thompson's 22-yard TD pass to Deuce Vaughn with just over six minutes left helped the Wildcats (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) rally from a 24-10 halftime deficit with a second-half shutout that stopped an eight-game conference losing streak going back to last year. The Red Raiders (5-3, 2-3) reached K-State's 46-yard line with three minutes to go. But the Wildcats responded when Felix Anudike-Uzomah sacked Henry Colombi for a 6-yard loss and Nate Matlack dropped the Texas Tech quarterback from behind on fourth-and-16. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Skylar Thompson set the tone for Kansas State when the quarterback put his left shoulder down and bulled into the end zone for the first of his two touchdown runs as the Wildcats opened the season with a 24-7 win over Stanford on Saturday. Thompson, who later had a 13-yard TD run, opened the scoring when he knocked cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly to the ground on a 6-yard TD run in the first quarter. "There's a lot that went into that touchdown, a lot that people didn't see, and a lot of time spent on my own," Thompson said. "In the midst of a situation that once seemed very dark and stormy, to see the fruit fall from the tree, to see the sun shine a little bit and to take a deep breath...It all worked out and everything happened for a reason." Thompson missed most of last season after he injured his throwing (right) shoulder in the third game. But he returned for his sixth year in the K-State program because of his love of the game and the desire for a better finish, taking advantage of the extra season of eligibility received amid the pandemic. - Kansas State/AP College Football

The Kansas State football program will have a quartet of captains leading the way this fall. The Wildcats announced their four captains for the 2021 season Tuesday: quarterback Skylar Thompson, center Noah Johnson, defensive tackle Timmy Horne and defensive back Jahron McPherson. It's the third straight season Thompson has earned the honor, putting him in exclusive company - he's only the sixth Wildcat ever to accomplish that feat. The others are Brooks Barta (1990-92), Mark Simoneau (1997-99), Collin Klein (2010-12), B.J. Finney (2012-14) and Dalton Risner (2016-18). - Manhattan Mercury

Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson, who had waited his whole career for an opportunity to cash in on his college football fame, was a little more cautious. But on Wednesday, one day before reporting for his final preseason training camp, Thompson officially joined an increasing number of college athletes and dipped his toe into the name, image and likeness (NIL) pool for the first time. Thompson's public appearance at Salina's Long McArthur Ford - Lee is the dealership's general manager - was the first step in a six-month endorsement deal with the company that also includes radio and television commercials, among other things.

"It has been a tremendous opportunity for all of us student-athletes," Thompson said while signing autographs and taking pictures with fans in the dealership's showroom. "I feel like it has been a long time coming, that it should have been passed, but I'm glad I get to capitalize on it a little bit here for my senior year. "But I think the biggest thing for me is, yes, it's a great opportunity for us, but my focus is on winning football games this year. That's the most important piece of the puzzle to me, and this is just a cool opportunity." Thompson and his teammates begin practicing for the upcoming season Friday. - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson and running back Deuce Vaughn have been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award annually is given to the best player in college football. Thompson is on the list for the second straight season. And Vaughn's presence marks the first time two Wildcats have been on the list since quarterback Jake Waters and wide receiver Tyler Lockett were on it in 2014.

With 30 starts under his belt, Thompson will begin the 2021 season ranked in the top 10 in 15 career categories, including the top spot for interception percentage (1.84), third in yards per completion (12.87), and fifth in completions (390), passing efficiency (136.01), rushing yards by a quarterback (1,083) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (22). He also ranks seventh in career passing yards (5,201) and passing touchdowns (30). - Manhattan Mercury

All eyes will be on Thompson when K-State opens the 2021 season against Stanford back here in September. Now that he's healthy, the Wildcats might have what it takes to surprise this year. Experienced quarterbacks are hard to beat in college football, and Thompson has that in spades. The former Fort Osage standout has been at K-State since 2016. He has played in 35 games and made 30 starts. He has twice toppled Oklahoma. His career statistics stack up with some of the best in program history. And he is back for a sixth year as a "super senior."

No wonder Klieman thinks he is a NFL prospect. "He has elite arm talent," Klieman said. "He is also a good enough athlete, if they don't ask him to run like Lamar Jackson anyway. And he has played a lot of football. The more football you have played and the more experience that you have, that is what they are lacking in the NFL right now. Teams are looking for guys who have played a lot of snaps for multiple seasons. His experience will give him an opportunity. He will have a good year this year." - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his throwing shoulder, leaving freshman Will Howard to lead the No. 22 Wildcats the rest of the way. Thompson was hurt two weeks ago when Texas Tech's Rico Jeffers drove him into the ground after unloading a pass in the Wildcats' 31-21 victory. The Red Raiders were penalized 15 yards and Jeffers was ejected for the late hit.

Thompson is a senior, but the NCAA has frozen eligibility clocks for the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means he could return for one more season. It's unclear whether that decision has been made. Howard made his first start on Saturday at TCU. He threw for 117 yards with an interception and ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, leading the Wildcats (3-1, 2-0) to a 21-14 victory that kept them in first place in the Big 12. The Wildcats are off this week before facing Kansas on Oct. 24. - AP College Football

Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman had little to say about injured starting quarterback Skylar Thompson on Saturday. Thompson, who was injured in the second quarter of last week's 31-21 win over Texas Tech, did not travel for Saturday's game at TCU. Freshman Will Howard moved into the lineup, helping the Wildcats top the Horned Frogs 21-14. And that's where Klieman wanted the focus to be during his postgame press conference: on the win, and the players who participated, not Thompson. "We'll talk about Skylar on Monday," Klieman said. "He wasn't available." Howard called it "a blessing" to be in the lineup for the first time as a collegian. He just didn't like the circumstances that transpired that brought it to pass. "It kind of sucks how it happened with Skylar," Howard said, "but we're hoping he's going to get better." - Manhattan Mercury

Kansas State received some good news Sunday on the Skylar Thompson injury front. In fact, K-State coach Chris Klieman wouldn't even rule his senior quarterback out for Saturday's game at TCU. "I think he has an opportunity to play, actually," Klieman said Monday during the Big 12 coaches teleconference. Thompson went down midway through the second quarter of Saturday's 31-21 victory over Texas Tech following a late hit that resulted in Red Raider linebacker Riko Jeffers' ejection for targeting. When he returned to the sideline in the second half, Thompson's right arm was in a sling. "Nothing was broken, which was good, and that was just an x-ray yesterday, so we're doing some tests today," Klieman said Monday. "There's not fracture, so that's a positive sign for Skylar." - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman didn't want to speculate on the status of Skylar Thompson going forward. "I do not have any update on Skylar," Klieman said following the team's 31-21 home win over Texas Tech, "other than (team doctors) said he is out." Thompson, K-State's starting quarterback, was injured by Red Raider linebacker Riko Jeffers at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter. He immediately went to the locker room and did not reenter the game. When Thompson returned to the field after halftime, his right (throwing) arm was in a sling. Jeffers was assessed a pair of penalties for the hit: roughing the passer and targeting.

The targeting call was reviewed; after it was upheld, Jeffers was ejected from the contest, which forced him to miss the rest of the first half as well as the final two quarters. Despite an uproar on social media that Jeffers' tackle may have been out of line, Klieman forcefully refuted that notion. "It was penalized. One thing: Matt Wells is as classy a guy is there is," said Klieman, referring to Texas Tech's second-year head coach. "So no, there was nothing malicious by it at all. It's just the game of football." - Manhattan Mercury

Recognition kept rolling in for Kansas State's football team Tuesday. Fresh off its stunning, come-from-behind win at then-No. 3 Oklahoma, head coach Chris Klieman earned the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, awarded by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Trailing by 21 points, 35-14, late in the third quarter, Klieman coached the Wildcats to a 38-35 victory in Norman, Okla. It was K-State's first road win in school history over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press poll. The 21-point rally tied for the largest comeback win in K-State's record book; the Wildcats had overcome 21-point deficits on four other occasions. But Saturday's was the latest start of the five 21-point comeback wins, with K-State beginning its trek toward victory with 1:36 remaining in the third period. Klieman now has two wins over top-five foes in two seasons. K-State also topped Oklahoma last year in Manhattan, when the Sooners entered No. 5. It's the first time the Wildcats ever have defeated a top-five opponent in back-to-back seasons. - Manhattan Mercury

A Kansas State squad that lost its opener to Arkansas State two weeks ago, had its roster depleted by COVID-19, and entered its game against No. 3 Oklahoma as a four-touchdown underdog overcame it all to pull off one of the biggest stunners of the season. Skylar Thompson passed for 334 yards and ran for three touchdowns, and the Wildcats rallied from 21 points down to beat the third-ranked Sooners 38-35, a 50-yard field goal by Blake Lynch with 4:32 remaining providing the margin of victory. - AP College Football

Skylar Thompson passed for 334 yards and ran for three touchdowns, and Kansas State rallied from 21 points down to beat No. 3 Oklahoma 38-35 on Saturday. Freshman Deuce Vaughn caught four passes for 129 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Wildcats, who were coming off a season-opening loss to Arkansas State. It was Kansas State's first-ever road win against a top-three team in the AP poll. Oklahoma freshman Spencer Rattler passed for 387 yards and four touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions. Kansas State upset Oklahoma 48-41 in Manhattan, Kansas, last year.   A year ago, Thompson was still adjusting to the fact that this was now his team. He started as a sophomore, but was locked in a constant battle with backup Alex Delton, who later transferred to TCU. Thompson blossomed into the unquestioned leader on offense and the entire team, which was vital during the COVID-19 shutdown. He also was an effective leader on the field, where he completed nearly 60% of his passes for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns with just five interceptions while ranking second on the team in rushing with 405 yards and 11 scores. His composure could be tested early, with a rebuilt offensive line and the loss of the two leading running backs from a year ago. But having a veteran quarterback who begins his third year as a starter and second season in Courtney Messingham's offense clearly is an advantage. "I think it's a huge deal, not just for myself, but for our offense," Messingham said. - Topeka Capital Journal

Joshua Youngblood's longest run on Saturday night was the longest possible, 100 yards. Skylar Thompson's was 17. Both runs played huge roles in Kansas State's win over Texas Tech. Youngblood raced from end zone to end zone for a kickoff-return touchdown and Thompson ran for a key first down in the closing minutes as the Wildcats held off the Red Raiders 30-27. Thompson passed for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Lynch kicked two 32-yard field goals and a 43-yarder for Kansas State (7-4, 4-4 Big 12), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Youngblood fielded the kickoff one yard deep in the end zone midway through the third quarter, ran up the right side and covered the final 40 yards running just inches inside the right sideline, eluding multiple defenders. Kansas State was protecting a 3-point lead with three minutes to play when Thompson dropped back on third-and-11 at K-State's 24-yard line, and took a quarterback draw for 17 yards toward midfield with Tech double teaming the Wildcats' top receiver, Dalton Schoen. Kansas State converted one more first down to clinch the win. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Kansas State's rise can be traced to quarterback Skylar Thompson's mastery of the new offense. Thompson has seven of Kansas State's 11 rushing touchdowns the last two games in a throwback to what Collin Klein did for the Wildcats years ago. Klein is now the Kansas State quarterbacks coach. Thompson needs just 30 rushing yards to become just the fourth Kansas State quarterback to have more than 3,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a career. "We're not an option offense, so we don't practice that much more than a few handful of times a week," Klieman said. - AP College Football

Chris Kleiman views himself as a caretaker for Kansas State football, sustaining and building on the traditions that predecessor Bill Snyder established over more than two decades. Turns out that applies to the Wildcats' dominance of Kansas. Skylar Thompson ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns, Harry Trotter added 92 yards rushing and another score, and No. 22 Kansas State romped to a 38-10 win in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday to continue a streak of dominance that Snyder established and relished.

Thompson also had 129 yards passing for the Wildcats (6-2, 3-2), who showed no letdown from their upset of then-No. 5 Oklahoma in bludgeoning the Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) for the 23rd time in 27 games. "It was our best football game of the year," Klieman said. Carter Stanley was 13 of 23 for 115 yards and two interceptions for Kansas before leaving with an injury late in the game. Star running back Pooka Williams managed just 61 yards rushing. The Wildcats held new coach Les Miles' team to 241 yards of offense, a 2-for-10 mark on third down and stopped it on both fourth down tries. Kansas State also had four sacks, dominated the time of possession and had 342 yards rushing in what turned into a lopsided affair. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Skylar Thompson and Kansas State dealt a big blow to No. 5 Oklahoma's national title hopes. The Wildcats' quarterback threw for 213 yards while running for four touchdowns, the defense did just enough against Heisman Trophy contender Jalen Hurts and the Sooners' prolific offense, and Kansas State held on through a harrowing fourth quarter for a 48-41 victory Saturday. It wasn't certain until Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1) tried on onside kick with 1:45 left. The ball caromed downfield and the Sooners recovered, but a review showed one of their players touched it one yard early.

The overturned call allowed new coach Chris Klieman to run out the clock on the Wildcats' first home win over the Sooners since 1996, and just their third win in Manhattan over a top-10 team. It also was the third consecutive week a top-10 team lost to an unranked foe. James Gilbert ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Youngblood also reached the end zone, as the Wildcats (5-2, 2-2) snapped the Sooners' nation-leading 22-game road winning streak. Their last true road defeat? At TCU, five years and 22 days ago. Hurts threw for 395 yards and a touchdown while running for 95 yards and three more. But despite another big game by the nation's leader in total offense, the Sooners couldn't overcome a multitude of mistakes: two turnovers, costly penalties and the ejection of one of their defensive leaders. - Kansas State/AP College Football

For the first time in over a month, Kansas State walked off the field with a win. Skylar Thompson accounted for two touchdowns and sparked a late game-winning drive to lead the Wildcats to a 24-17 victory over TCU on Saturday and their first Big 12 Conference win of the season. With eight minutes to play and the game tied 17-17, Thompson had a 61-yard run during an 11-play, 95-yard drive, capped by his 3-yard touchdown run with 2:45 to play. "I knew it was just a matter of time because we were finally getting in a rhythm offensively," Thompson said. "It was a great play call, but they gave us the look we were expecting on that touchdown and we executed the play."

TCU drove to the Kansas State 37 on the ensuing series, but couldn't convert on fourth-and-11. "Just the toughness and resolve because he got hit a lot and he always just kept coming back," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said of Thompson. Thompson threw for 172 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nick Lenners in the first quarter. It was Lenners first career touchdown reception. "It was unbelievable," Lenners said. It was everything I've ever dreamed of." The Wildcats (4-2, 1-2) finished with only 266 yards of offense and was stifled most of the game. One of their scores came off a blocked punt in the first quarter, and they were unable to connect on numerous long passes down the field. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Skylar Thompson only threw one touchdown pass in Kansas State's 31-24 road win at Mississippi State, but boy was it a big one. With 5:37 left in the fourth quarter and the game tied 24-24, Thompson rolled out and found Dalton Schoen wide open in the right side of the end zone and hit him with a 15-yard pass that would ultimately stand as the game-winner. "He lives for those moments," KSU head coach Klieman said. "He's prepared for that moment."

Thompson threw for 123 yards on 10-of-18 passing and managed to keep the Wildcat offense from crumbling under the pressure of self-inflicted wounds and a hostile crowd. It is the first time Kansas State has beaten a Power Five nonconference team on the road since 2011. "I thought he did a great job of staying calm under a lot of pressure," Klieman said. "I think we were running the football pretty successfully in the first half, and I think in the second half they decided they were going to find a way to bring pressure." KSU (3-0) led 17-14 at halftime but trailed 24-17 in the fourth quarter. Then a 100-yard Malik Knowles kickoff return tied the game, and Thompson's touchdown pass gave the Wildcats a 7-point lead. - AP College Football
