Shortly after safeties Jerrick Reed II and Tavian Combs were told that they were the University of New Mexico's top tacklers during a media interview, Reed immediately offered a correction. "Stop," Reed said in a playful tone. "I was the top tackler." Re ed recorded 89 total tackles, 54 unassisted after playing every game for the 3-9 Lobos. Combs, in his second year, finished with 81 total tackles, 40 unassisted. He played in 11 of 12 games. The two safeties know they will be expected to make just as man y tackles this season, which began with practices on Friday and Saturday. To prepare for the role, Combs added 20 pounds of muscle during the offseason. "It's the standard," Reed said of the safeties making tackles in Rocky Long's 3-3-5 defense. "People look at you to be that guy, you have to be that guy. You can't slack off because everybody will notice. Every day you gotta come in and work hard. Have the right mind-set, film study, eat right, take care of your body so that you can stay on top of your game and be that guy when your play is called."Reed, a preseason All-Mountain West Conference pick for the second straight season, arrived at UNM in 2019, when the Lobos struggled mightily against the pass, the deep ball especially. The Lobos allo wed 321.4 yards passing yards per game and ranked 130th and last in the Football Bowl Subdivision. But in 2021, UNM allowed 219.8 passing yards per game to rank 54th, its best passing defense since 2010 when the unit was ranked 53rd at 218.8 yards per ga me. "It's been night and day for sure," Reed said. "It was bad then, it's good now and we're gonna be better when the season comes." - Albuquerque Journal

For the first time in five years the University of New Mexico football team has at least two players on the preseason all-Mountain West team. Senior safety Jerrick Reed II and punter Aaron Rodriguez were both named to the 27-player team. The 2017 Lobos h ad three players named all-MWC. Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener is the preseason offensive player of the year. The pick for the defense is shared by San Jose State defensive lineman Cade Hall and San Diego State defensive back Patrick McMorris. - Sa nta Fe New Mexican

2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Jerrick Reed, DB,...Reed, who was a First Team pick in 2020 after leading the Mountain West in interceptions, led the team in tackles with 89 and in pass breakups with seven. He also recorded double-dig it tackles three times including a high-water mark of 14 against Air Force and 13 against Colorado State. University of New Mexico senior defensive back Jerrick Reed II was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team by the league's media. Reed is the first Lobo to receive the preseason honor since OL Aaron Jenkins in 2018. Reed led the MWC in interceptions ( 4) last year when he was named first-team All-MWC as a safety. UNM had not a first-team All-MWC non-specialist selection since 2014. Reed's four interceptions last season put him at No. 5 in the nation in interceptions per game, and he added three pass b reakups, a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. - Albuquerque Journal

2020 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB - Jerrick Reed, Jr., New Mexico,...Reed, a junior, had four of UNM's six interceptions on the season as the Lobos tied for the Mountain West lead it turnover margin at +4. Reed's four interceptions were the most in the league (only one other player had as many as three) and his 0.57 interceptions per game also led the league. Reed's four interceptions in a seven-game season were the most by UNM since 2014, and it equaled the team total from a year ago.
