Caleb Kelly can't escape the jokes. Just this spring, OU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch slipped one in. Standing in front of the room, Grinch ended a phrase with "even like eight years ago, Caleb Kelly." Even head coach Lincoln Riley recently got a shot in about Kelly's extended college career. "I'm used to it now because it's been going on for like two years now," Kelly said. "Now here on like my third senior year, 'Oh yeah, I'm the old guy. I get it.' "But it's funny when they joke about six years and it's actually my sixth year."

Kelly is a 23-year-old linebacker. This September will mark his sixth season with the Sooners. He's the last player from the Bob Stoops era. It's why Kelly was beaming after actually playing in Saturday's annual spring game - his first meaningful action in pads in front of fans for the first time since Dec. 28, 2019 in the Peach Bowl. "I thought about it this morning when I woke up," Kelly said. "First off, I woke up today. That's a blessing thinking about all the people that didn't. Then I go get to play football. "It's been so long." - Daily Oklahoman

On the practice field Tuesday, OU sixth-year linebacker Caleb Kelly had a breakthrough. "Today was the first day where my body kind of caught up," Kelly said. "It's weird with the knee. Some practices you'll be fast and then some practices you will be really slow and you'll say, 'I was just good.' "There's a lot of up and down with it. When you are making a play, your angles have to change when one day you are fast, one day you are slower. It's hard to do that." Coming back from his second devastating knee injury in as many years, Kelly is hoping the fast days start to greatly outweigh the slow days. Sooners inside linebackers coach Brian Odom said Kelly's improvement this spring has been noticeable. "There's been a jump," Odom said. "He's more fluid. The things he's seeing, he's processing faster. The thing with it is it makes you excited for Caleb, not only because of his size and knowledge, also very excited for him as a person after all he's been through here at the university." Kelly certainly has been through quite a bit. - Daily Oklahoman

Several OU players are out with injuries, OU coach Lincoln Riley announced Saturday. Riley said senior linebacker Caleb Kelly, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Marcus Hicks and sophomore receiver Cason Grant have incurred injuries through fall camp. Justin Harrington, an incoming junior college transfer, is also injured, but Riley noted he suffered the injury prior to his arrival to campus. "Caleb Kelly, Cason Grant, Marcus Hicks and Justin Harrington have all had some lower-extremity injuries that require medical attention," Riley said during a Zoom video conference. "Those guys will all miss a substantial part of the season." Kelly, a former Rivals.com five-star prospect, missed most of last season from an injury sustained during OU's 2019 spring practices. He has played in 41 games over four seasons since 2016. He's recorded 160 tackles, 11 for loss, five sacks, an interception, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries during his OU career. - Norman Transcript
