  07/30/21 - TE Jovani HaskinsrSr/2022, Rutgers, 6-5, 252 (DS#27 TE) + More +

Greg Schiano believes Jovani Haskins could be on the verge of becoming an elite tight end. And Haksins is one of several tight ends who could help that position group improve considerably this season and potentially become an area of strength. Schiano said last week at Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis that the position group has "really developed." That could be a boon for the offense. "That's important because a tight end in an offense is always a quarterback's security blanket," Schiano said. "When you have a good one it becomes more than that: It becomes a weapon." Haskins, a Bergenfield product, leads that group as the veteran.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Haskins had six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns last season, his first at Rutgers after transferring from West Virginia. He's also impressed Schiano with his blocking ability, a skill that he's continued to develop. Schiano believes he's "worked himself into what I think is going to be a big-time tight end." "He's in an offense now that can utilize all of his abilities," Schiano said. "He just needed to hone those abilities a little because he really hadn't accumulated cumulative repetitions at blocking. I think he's really a strong guy and he's really learned how to block. So he can be a valuable asset in all phases for us." - Asbury Park Press

  05/17/21 - TE Jovani HaskinsrSr/2022, Rutgers, 6-5, 252 (DS#27 TE) + More +

Noah Vedral and the rest of Rutgers' offense are trying to take the next step and build on a mostly solid 2020 season, and for Vedral part of that means improving his connection with tight end Jovani Haskins. Vedral likes what Haskins does for the offense. The Rutgers quarterback wants even more of it this upcoming season. "That's been a big focus of ours," Vedral said of working with the tight ends. "One of mine personally with Jovani is just building that relationship, making that a little more consistent and building that trust between he and I. So he knows I'm looking out for him and going to put the ball in a good spot, and that I know he's going to go get it for me."

6-foot-6, 250 pounds, a solid blocker Haskins, a Bergenfield product, started all nine games last season after transferring from West Virginia. He finished with six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns (including one against Ohio State) and was a solid blocker. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Haskins impressed his coaches in the process. "Jovani is a guy who played a ton of football for us and was a mainstay on the field at all times and really performed well," offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson said in February. "We asked him to put his hand in the ground a little bit more than he had in other parts of his career, but he flourished and he's going to continue to because he's really coachable." - Asbury Park Press

  02/24/21 - TE Jovani HaskinsrSr/2022, Rutgers, 6-5, 252 (DS#27 TE) + More +

Rutgers' tight ends room has been star-crossed in recent years. Attrition, injuries and a lack of consistent production has made the position group arguably the weakest on the Scarlet Knights' roster. Offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson believes the unit is about to turn the corner. He expects Jovani Haskins will be a big reason why. "Jovani is a guy who played a ton of football for us and was a mainstay on the field at all times. He really performed well," Gleeson said. "We asked him to put his hand in the ground a little bit more than he had in other parts of his career, but he flourished. And he's going to continue to because he's really coachable."

Haskins, a Bergenfield product, was a top-10 recruit in the state during the 2016 signing cycle and started his college career at Miami before moving on to West Virginia. He had some success for the Mountaineers in 2018, but fell off the following season after offseason legal issues. Haskins then landed at Rutgers last June and started all nine games in 2020, hauling in six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns while showing flashes as a blocker. Head coach Greg Schiano praised Haskins' efforts, saying he got better each week. - Star Ledger
