Five months after stepping away from football to attend to the mounting challenges of his life, Georgia Tech defensive end Antonneous Clayton is back among teammates and coaches. As the Yellow Jackets progress through spring practice, he is trying to become a more consistent player and hone details such as his stance, obstacles far preferable to those that he said overwhelmed him last winter. "I'm not really concerned about anything else," Clayton said Thursday. "I've kind of handled all of my off-field issues at this point. I'm having fun right now. This is the happiest I've been playing football in a very long time, a very long time."

For Clayton, 2020 was a set of unrelenting trials, as it was for so many. Clayton came to Tech as a celebrated transfer in 2019 from Florida and had to sit out that season after his request for an immediate-eligibility waiver was denied. Last year, he was entering his senior season - potentially his final opportunity to prove himself as an NFL prospect after three unremarkable seasons with the Gators - amid uncertainty that the season would even be played. Beyond that, Clayton was caring for his young son Antonneous Jr. Then, he missed the first two games with what he described as a medical condition, which also put him behind in his classes and lowered his conditioning level. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Georgia Tech defensive end Antonneous Clayton has opted out of the remainder of the season, an announcement he made from his Twitter account Tuesday. Clayton said that he was taking a break on account of his mental health, saying that he had not previously made that his top priority because he wanted to be a role model for his teammates and other non-teammate friends who look up to him. Clayton transferred to Tech from Florida in 2019 and then sat out the season after his request for an immediate-eligibility waiver (and a subsequent appeal) was denied by the NCAA. After an injury kept him off the field for the first two games of this season, Clayton has played in five games, starting four. He has nine tackles, 2.5 for loss and two sacks.

Clayton added that he was making the decision to take leave of the team "so that I can come back stronger next year and be the leader and teammate that this team deserves and get my priorities and life in order." Clayton, a senior, can return for next season, as the NCAA has granted all fall-sports athletes an extra season of eligibility. Tech has three more games scheduled, including a game Saturday at N.C. State. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

The NCAA has granted Georgia Tech defensive back Myles Sims' appeal for immediate eligibility, making him available for the Yellow Jackets' opener at Clemson on Thursday night. Sims transferred to Georgia Tech in May. The Atlanta native redshirted as a true freshman at Michigan last season. He will have four seasons of eligibility remaining. The NCAA denied defensive lineman Antonneous Clayton's waiver request for immediate eligibility following his transfer from Florida. He must sit out this season and will have one season of eligibility remaining. Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins says in a statement the ruling on Sims was "the right decision for the young man." Collins says he "vehemently" disagrees with the ruling on Clayton, which he says "does not have the best interests of the student-athlete in mind." - AP College Football
