He also ranked seventh nationally in passing yards per game, with an average of 306.0 yards per game through the air. For the season, Welch completed 315-of-477 passes for 3,366 yards and 22 touchdowns.   SEPT 27 STATS PERFORM FCS NATIONAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Liam Welch, Samford, QB, Grad, 6-2, 208, Augusta, Georgia,...Welch set Southern Conference records for passing yards (582) and total offensive yards (655) in a 55-48 overtime loss to then-No. 15 ETSU. He also set school records for completions (56) and attempts (73), a 76.7 percent accuracy that included three touchdowns and one interception against a defense that had allowed an average of only 7.7 points in its first three games. Welch rushed for 73 yards on 10 carries and scored on a two-point conversion.

  Samford's Liam Welch threw for 582 yards and had 655 yards of total offense against East Tennessee State, the highest totals in the Championship Subdivision in eight years. The last FCS player to put up those kinds of numbers was Stephen F. Austin's Brady Attaway, who threw for 662 yards and, with minus-7 yards rushing, had 655 in total offense against Prairie View in 2013. - AP College Football

  Liam Welch threw four touchdown passes as Samford rolled to a 52-14 victory over Tennessee Tech in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night. Welch, the Southern Conference's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, was 33-of-44 passing for 370 yards. Montrell Washington made eight catches for 170 yards receiving, and he scored on a 62-yard punt return in the first quarter.

David Gist's 3-yard touchdown run pulled Tennessee Tech to 17-14 with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter before the Bulldogs scored on their next five drives. Welch threw touchdown passes between a scoring run each from DeMarcus Ware and Jay Stanton from inside the 10. Samford, which finished fourth in the nation averaging 40.3 points during the spring season, put up 475 yards of offense against the Golden Eagles. Tennessee Tech's Davis Shanley completed 19 of 34 passes for 159 yards including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Justin Oden.   MARCH 1 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Liam Welch, Samford, Sr., QB, Augusta, Ga.,...Samford quarterback Liam Welch accounted for five touchdowns and turned in his first career 300-yard passing day as the Bulldogs dropped Western Carolina 55-27 on Saturday. The senior from Augusta, Georgia, was 26-for-36 through the air for 311 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 18 times for 83 yards and three scores in finishing with 394 yards of total offense. In all, Welch completed seven passes of 20 yards or more and led the Bulldogs on eight touchdown drives for their first win of the season.   Liam Welch threw for two touchdowns and ran for three more in leading Samford to a 55-27 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday. Welch was 26-of-36 passing for 311 yards and rushed for 83 yards on 18 carries. Jay Stanton had 135 yards and a score on 23 carries. Ryan Glover threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns but was also intercepted twice as Western Carolina (0-5, 0-2) dropped its second spring game after losing three nonconference games in the fall. The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1 Southern Conference) led 21-20 at halftime then scored on their first three possessions of the third quarter on short touchdown runs by Dakota Chapman and Welch. Welch threw a 31-yard pass to A.J. Toney and added another short TD run early in the fourth. He had a 24-yard rushing score and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Watson in the first half.   Liam Welch passed for one score and ran for another as Samford rallied past Western Carolina 31-13 on Saturday. The Bulldogs (5-6, 4-4 Southern Conference) spotted Western Carolina (3-8, 2-6) a 10-point lead before a punt return for a TD, a Welch run and a Mitchell Fineran field goal gave Stanford a 17-13 lead by halftime. Montrell Washington fielded a Western Carolina punt and raced 59 yards for Samford's first score.   SEPT 30/WEEK 5 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Liam Welch, Samford, Jr., QB, Augusta, Ga.,...Samford quarterback Liam Welch entered Saturday's 61-55, four-overtime win over No. 25 The Citadel in the third quarter after an injury to starter Chris Oladokun and proceeded to throw for 189 yards and three touchdowns and run for 24 yards and a score to lead the Bulldogs to the upset.

Welch recorded his first two passing TDs in the final eight minutes of regulation, including a 67-yard scoring strike with 1:43 left, to knot the score at 38 and send the game to OT. On the Bulldogs' first overtime possession, the Augusta, Georgia, junior fired a 25-yard touchdown pass, which The Citadel answered. After the squads traded TDs and field goals, Welch gave the homestanding Bulldogs the walk-off win with a 2-yard touchdown run.   Liam Welch scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth overtime and Samford held off The Citadel 61-55 on Saturday. The Bulldogs of The Citadel trailed 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but Brandon Rainey connected with Raleigh Webb for a 17-yard touchdown, Jacob Godek kicked a 23-yard field goal and Rainey added a 1-yard TD run as the Citadel scored 17 straight points to take a 38-24 lead with 8:08 left in regulation. Backup quarterback Welch answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that he capped with a 5-yard TD toss to Michael Vice to pull the Bulldogs of Samford (3-2, 2-0 Southern Conference) within 38-31. Following a punt by The Citadel that gave Samford the ball at its own 20-yard line, Welch used three plays before hitting A.J. Toney for a 67-yard scoring strike to knot the score at 38.

The two teams traded two touchdowns and a field goal through the first three overtimes before the Samford defense kept The Citadel (2-3. 0-1) scoreless, leading to the game-winning drive. Welch completed 9 of 18 passes for 189 yards and three TDs with one interception for Samford. Samford starting QB Chris Oladokun hit 9 of 18 passes for 129 yards and ran for 18 yards and two scores. Jay Stanton rushed for 97 yards and two TDs on 15 carries, while Toney finished with six catches for 102 yards. Rainey connected on 6 of 7 passes for 196 yards and two scores for The Citadel.
