Scott Patchan, Colorado State, Player News

2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL - Scott Patchan, Sr., Colorado State,...Patchan capped his collegiate campaign with a dominant 2021 season and became the first Colorado State defensive lineman in Mountain West history to earn first-team honors twice in his career. The last Ram defensive lineman to earn two first-team designations was Sean Moran in 1994 and 1995 when Colorado State was a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Tampa, Fla., native enjoyed two highly successful season with the Rams. In 2021, Patchan tallied 18.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, good for sixth all-time in a season in program history. His 27.0 tackles for loss and 16.0 sacks are just outside the top 10 for a career. - Colorado State Football

With just four games to work with in 2020, it's hard to say how dominant the Rams' defensive line could be in a full season. CSU's defensive front was really good in those four games, leading the nation in average number of tackles for lost yardage per game (10.5) and finishing fourth in sacks (4.0 a game) and 12th in rushing defense (108.5 a game). And they did that despite constant questions among players about whether a particular game was going to be played and who would or would not be available because of COVID-19 test results and quarantines. "I think it'll be a much better season this year just because of that alone, being able to actually practice every day and not having to worry about that so much," senior defensive end Scott Patchan said Thursday.

With Patchan and the other three starters - Manny Jones, Toby McBride and Devin Phillips - returning this season, along with top reserve Ellison Hubbard and the addition of Boston College transfer Mike Ciaffoni, the Rams enter fall camp with a defensive line that position coach Antoine Smith believes will be among the best in the nation. That might be a bit optimistic, but CSU's defensive front should be among the best in the Mountain West. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Colorado State defensive end Scott Patchan and punter Ryan Stonehouse were named to the preseason All-Mountain West football team, the conference announced Thursday at its annual media days at the Cosmopolitan. Both players were first-team selections to the all-conference team following the 2020 season, as were each of the other 22 selections on offense and defense as well as two of the four specialists. Patchan was one of the top pass-rushers in the country during the Rams' COVID-19-abbreviated season with 5.5 sacks in four games - an average of 1.38 per game. It was his first year at CSU after joining the program as a graduate transfer from Miami. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

It could be argued that the best recruits the Colorado State football team is landing are already on the roster. The front line of defense for the Rams is looking stalwart by keeping several stars onboard for next season. Normally, players with eligibility remaining choosing to stay on the roster isn't news. These aren't normal times. The 2020 season didn't count against NCAA student-athletes' eligibility, so seniors can stay another year. But there's the allure of the NFL or a graduate transfer to greener pastures. Some are leaving, but some key contributors are staying.

Defensive line stars Manny Jones and Scott Patchan have announced they'll return for another year at CSU. Fellow defensive lineman Ellison Hubbard is also expected to return. Those are arguably CSU's top defensive senior players, all coming back. Patchan - a graduate transfer from Miami - led the MW in sacks and tackles for lost yardage per game in the abbreviated four-game 2020 season with 5.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. - Fort Collins Coloradoan
