Back in early June, shortly after announcing plans to join the Ragin' Cajuns as a graduate transfer, former Arizona State offensive lineman Zach Robertson addressed why he left the Power 5 program and sat out what would have been his 2019 redshirt senior season. Details were scarce, but Robertson - who started multiple games for the Pac-12's Sun Devils, including nine in 2018 - was candid. "I was just battling a lot of things that were going on...and it took a huge toll on my mental health," he told The Daily Advertiser then. "I didn't know how to cope with it so I decided to step away from football for a year and get my mind back right."Last week, Robertson - now the 3-0 Cajuns' starting left tackle - revealed much more and, in the process, mad e a plea for college football players facing circumstances similar to his own to keep mental health atop their priority list. "I went through a real lot of issues in … 2019," Robertson said. "I went through depression, anxiety. "Both of those things, y ou know, I mean...the way I was raised, it wasn't an emphasis to make sure those things are OK, your mental health is OK. "So, it got to the point where it overwhelmed me and I made wrong decisions and I faced the consequences," he added. "I had to sit o ut. I basically didn't know if I was ever going to play football again. And those two things scared the hell out of me." - Daily Advertiser

For an offensive lineman from Arizona State who has decided to join the Ragin' Cajuns for the 2020 college football season, it's all about connections. Zach Robertson - a 6-foot-6, 336-pounder from St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, California - played i n 30 games over four seasons at Arizona State, including nine as a redshirt freshman in 2016, 12 in 2017 and nine in 2018. He started multiple games including several in 2017, when that season current UL head coach Billy Napier was Arizona State's offens ive coordinator and current Cajuns offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Rob Sale was ASU's offensive line coach."It's huge, having some people that were in my corner from the get-go," Robertson, who graduated from Arizona State with a ba chelor's degree in liberal studies, told The Daily Advertiser in a telephone interview Wednesday. "Going into this process, I was going into basically a whole different situation. Roberston, who had four different offensive line coaches during his stay a t Arizona State, did not play in 2019 due to what he said were personal reasons. "I was just battling a lot of things that were going on...and it took a huge toll on my mental," he said. "I didn't know how to cope with it so I decided to step away from f ootball for a year and get my mind back right." - Daily Advertiser
